The French Press - For the Perfect Cup of Coffee!

By admin at 7:27 am on July 22, 2007 | No comments

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I use an automatic drip coffee maker to make my morning brew because it’s quick and convenient. But sometimes I want a special treat as I’m working, so I use my French Press.

I grind fresh coffee beans, pour filtered water into a pan and heat it, then spoon the ground coffee into the French Press (also called a press pot). When the water is the perfect temperature (it should be around 190 to 200 degrees F.), I carefully pour it into the French Press and let the coffee brew for about 4 minutes. Then I press the metal filter down to trap all the coffee grounds before I pour myself the perfect cup of coffee and put the remaining coffee from the pot into a carafe. Ahhh…what a treat!

If you love coffee, but you don’t own a French Press, you owe it to yourself to buy one. They aren’t expensive and they really are the best way to brew the most flavorful cup of coffee.

Click here to find a French Press and also order gourmet coffee.

Have You Tried Reuseable Muffin Baking Cups?

By admin at 8:18 am on June 30, 2007 | No comments

Okay, so cupcake or muffin papers aren’t exactly a kitchen “gadget.” But I think these reuseable muffin baking cups from Kaiserflex would definitely fit into that category.

muffinbakingcups

These handy muffin cups can be reused for 1000 bakings. The set of 6 comes in assorted colors and they’re heat resistant to 500 degrees F. The flexible cups allow for easy muffin release and are dishwasher safe (put them on the top shelf of the dishwasher).

Since I never seem to have enough of the paper muffin cups when I need them, these reusuable muffin baking cups are this week’s “gotta have” kitchen gadget. Use them with any standard muffin tin and you’re ready to bake muffins, cupcakes, and other goodies.

Here are some recipes to get you started:

Stuck on Silicone

By admin at 6:41 am on June 26, 2007 | No comments

You either love Martha Stewart or you loathe her. Either way, you’ve got to give the woman credit. She knows her way around the kitchen and uses only the best ingredients, cooking tools and accessories.

Silicone Baking Mat

I first learned about fiberglass-reinforced, nonstick, heatproof, silicone pastry mats (Silpat was the brand she used) watching one of her cooking shows years ago. When I saw how cookies (perfectly baked with no burnt bottoms) slid off a baking sheet lined with Silpat, I just had to try this for myself. I ordered one of these flexible mats from the Martha Stewart website.

Suddenly, the only thing stuck on silicone was ME.

These baking mats are also perfect to use when rolling out dough for pies. And, whether you’re using the mats for baking cookies or pastries, food slides right off the cookie sheet.

Silicone Muffin Pan

Today, kitchenware stores across the country carry all sorts of silicone baking products including muffin tins, cake pans, spatulas, and whisks, etc. These items can withstand high temperatures and don’t crack or melt. And foods baked in silicone rarely burn.

Try one of these flexible baking pans for yourself. My guess is, the only thing stuck on silicone will be YOU!

Mortar and Pestle - The Perfect Father’s Day Gift for a Dad Who Cooks!

By admin at 8:28 am on June 17, 2007 | No comments

With all the fancy food processors, blenders, and coffee grinders on the market today, it’s easy to assume something as basic as a mortar and pestle set is no longer needed in the kitchen.

But find out more about this handy little “gadget” and you probably won’t make that assumption.

This is the perfect Father’s Day gift for dads who cook. For some reason, men seem to love pounding and grinding things into a fine pulp! Go figure.

mortarandpestle

A mortar is a sturdy bowl and a pestle is a club-shaped tool with a rounded bottom. Together, this dynamic duo is still the ideal kitchen tool when you want to pulverize spices, herbs, nuts, or other foods, reducing them to a thick paste.

Read a short history of the mortar and pestle, and learn how to use this tool, here.

Find recipes that use ingredients pulverized with a mortar and pestle here.

Making the Most of a Cheese Plane

By admin at 6:15 am on June 14, 2007 | No comments

cheeses2

A cheese plane is so convenient when serving hard cheeses. But, are you making the most of this handy kitchen tool you just “gotta have”?

cheeseplane

Here are a few other ways to make the most of your cheese plane:

1) Use it to create thin slices of potatoes for potato chips (see recipe, below).

2) Pull it across the top of a cold, hard, solid stick of butter when you need a small piece that won’t tear a slice of bread or toast.

3) Use it to zest a lemon, lime, or other citrus fruit.

potatoes

QUICK AND EASY POTATO CHIPS

A few baking potatoes

Olive oil

Spices (try rosemary and sage, or barbeque seasoning mix)

Salt

Pepper

Wash the potatoes thoroughly (scrub the skins with a vegetable brush). Pull the cheese plane across each potato, cutting it into thin slices. Put the slices into a bowl and toss with the spices, olive oil, salt and pepper.

Line a baking sheet with a baking mat or parchment paper. Arrange potato slices on the baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for about 30 minutes at 375 degrees.

NOTE: Sweet potatoes also make delicious chips.

Make the Most of an Egg Slicer

By admin at 5:49 am on June 4, 2007 | No comments

Hi, this is Daisy. If you read my suggestions for great kitchen gadgets on a regular basis, you know I’m all for making the most of each and every kitchen utensil or appliance I suggest.

And I just love handy kitchen gadgets.

Sometimes though, these items are designed for such a specific purpose that they just don’t get used very often.

eggslicer

Items like an egg slicer, for example.

I mean, how many times a year do you need to slice boiled eggs into perfectly uniform pieces?

Probably not very often.

Still, if you have an egg slicer lurking in the bottom of a kitchen drawer, and you’ve never (or hardly ever) used it, dig it out now.

Here’s how to make the most of that handy little gadget:

First, find out how to use it to slice eggs here. You just might wonder why you haven’t been using it for this purpose more often.

Next, use it with other foods.

It’s great for slicing mushrooms, for example.

mushrooom

Or, try it with soft fruits…

kiwi

like kiwis….

or bananas.

Gee. By now, if you don’t already own an egg slicer you just might want to purchase one. It’s a “gotta have” kitchen gadget!

Here’s one that performs multiple functions as an egg slicer/wedger/piercer.

Happy slicing!

The Chimney Starter - A “Gotta Have” Gadget for Grilling

By admin at 6:06 am on May 26, 2007 | No comments

chimmey starter

If you don’t like to grill outdoors because it takes too long to get the coals hot, and the lighter fluid is too messy and smells unpleasant, then a chimney starter is a grilling gadget you just “gotta have.”

A chimney starter is easy to use. Just fill the top portion with charcoal. Add some crinkled up newspaper to the bottom and light the newspaper with a match. The coals will be hot enough for grilling food in about 15 to 20 minutes.

The chimney starter shown above is Weber’s Rapidfire Chimney Starter. The one below is from Charcoal Companion.

There are other brands of chimney starters on the market, too. You should be able to find them at your local hardware store for around $15.00 or less.
